History on the Big Bar Lake Ranch
The First Homesteader at Big Bar Lake
Harry Marriott on June 19, 1919 filed a homestead claim on what is now the Big Bar Lake Ranch.
Marriott arrived in B.C. as an immigrant in 1907 and ranches in the Big Bar area from 1912 to 1951. He started as a ranch hand and for the Gang Ranch and then built his own ranching empire which included Big Bar Lake Ranch, the OK Ranch, the Pine Crest Ranch and the Grinder Ranch on the Fraser River. After he retired from ranching, he wrote the book “Cariboo Cowboy” which is an autobiography of his life at Big Bar. Marriott describes Big Bar Lake Ranch in his book…
“I just don’t know of any place more peaceful looking and down to old Mother Earth than Big Bar Lake is, particularly in the early spring and summer.
I liked to sit on the side hill above the Lake in the early spring morning, hearing the meadow-larks singing their spring song, the squirrels cheeping away with their everlasting chatter, the low quacking of a mother duck reaching her little brood to swim, the plaintive and lonesome cry of the loon on the Lake, the wof-wof wof sharp bark of the coyote tirelessly trotting along in search of the something to eat, and sitting on his tailbone howling- and maybe getting an answering howl from his mate. All these things bring a sober and reflecting thought to my mind- that I, and all human beings, are just a very small cog in the great machine created by the All-Powerful Creator.”
