Info and History Data on Harrison Hot Springs:

Harrison Hot Springs is a small village renowned for its picturesque natural hot springs and stunning scenery. Its history is as rich and inviting as its thermal waters, offering a blend of natural wonder, cultural heritage, and a tranquil lifestyle.

The history of Harrison Hot Springs dates back thousands of years, with the area originally inhabited by the Sts'Ailes First Nations people. The Sts'Ailes, which means "Beating Heart," has a deep connection to the land, particularly the hot springs, which they considered sacred waters with healing properties. These springs, known as "Kwals" in the Halq'emeylem language, were believed to be a gift from the creator, used for healing and spiritual purposes.

The European discovery of the hot springs is attributed to the 1858 Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. Prospectors, drawn to the region by the promise of gold, stumbled upon the steaming waters, quickly gaining fame for their therapeutic qualities. The name "Harrison" comes from Benjamin Harrison, a Hudson's Bay Company deputy governor.

By the end of the 19th century, Harrison Hot Springs began to develop as a resort destination. The construction of the St. Alice Hotel and Bath House in 1886 marked the beginning of the area's transformation into a tourist hotspot. Visitors worldwide travelled to the village to bathe in the mineral-rich waters, which were believed to have healing powers.

Throughout the 20th century, the village continued to grow, with more facilities and attractions being added. The Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa, built on the original St. Alice Hotel site, became a central attraction, drawing visitors with its luxurious amenities and the surrounding area's natural beauty.

Today, Harrison Hot Springs is a vibrant community that balances tourism with respect for its natural environment and cultural heritage. It offers a variety of recreational activities, like hiking, boating, and fishing, alongside the famous hot springs. The village also hosts several cultural events, such as the Harrison Festival of the Arts, reflecting its commitment to cultural richness and community spirit.

Harrison Hot Springs remains a serene escape, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty centred around its legendary thermal waters.
